The Westgate School

The Westgate School

Slough

An expansion to allow the secondary school to expand from a 6FE to 8FE. Comprising a two storey extension housing the 6th Form and a multipurpose hall, and a new stand alone art and general classroom building. The two new facilities are linked to the school by elegant covered walkways. A number of internal alterations to the existing school were carried out to facilitate the transformation, converting art classrooms to new state-of-the-art science laboratories.

Re-Format was appointed to develop a series of feasibility options to address issues with previous expansions. The design team then progressed the scheme through planning and construction.

The design was approached to address the school’s aspiration to provide a new, inspirational, image-conscious campus. Several key themes were highlighted during discussions with the school and became drivers for the project: A modern welcoming public fa├žade for the school referencing the existing materials on the adjoining buildings; a new communal hub, with a general multipurpose hall creating a focal point within the school; shared courtyard, a sheltered external space for all which provides a quiet outlook for many classrooms.

“Now that we are here, I wanted to send a genuine, huge, heartfelt thanks for all your hard work and patience over the last couple of years to deliver us 2 fabulous Prep Rooms and new labs.

We know we are very lucky to have this environment, that you let us help shape, and that you dealt with all the management, build issues and budgets to secure what we could have at the best value for the school.”
