The Doone

The Doone

A rural development of 4 bespoke houses on the edge of the village of Selbourne in Hampshire, and within the South Downs National Park.

The design sets out to reinforce the existing character of loose-knit patterns of development within the village by positioning the buildings around a central informal courtyard. The houses have been designed to respond to the natural gradient of the site, allowing them to be set well into the slope, which creates a distinct sense of enclosure, minimises visual impact and protects the privacy of neighbouring properties.

The contained nature of the development ensures they will not detract from the predominantly linear form of settlement that is recognised within the Selborne Village Design Statement.

The South Downs National Park have used this project as an exemplar of how to build sensitively introduce high quality contemporary architecture into the park.
