Sky House Sky House South Downs National Park The proposed building for Sky House in West Harting is designed in such a manner to create a positive relationship to the South Downs landscape, with the existing topography as a key design principle. To integrate the massing of the proposed new building into the landscape the lower level will become an extension of the existing retaining wall structure, while the lighter upper floors are proposed to graft onto this lower structure. The materials proposed are intended to be both contextually relative to neighbouring buildings but also to be referential to the geology of the landscape it is situated within. Masonry construction is proposed using long format bricks to emphasize the horizontal striations of the design, referencing the sedimentary geological context. Blackened steel panels are proposed for the ‘pavilion’ structures of the ground and first floors. It has a reflective and changeable appearance in the sunlight giving a very characterful appearance throughout the day. Conceptually all above ground structures will be read as ‘pavilions’ on top of and attached to planes of landscape and the extended retaining wall extension.
