Positioned at the heart of the masterplan, the project is conceived as a civic destination where education, recreation and landscape come together to create a vibrant focal point for residents. More than a place of learning, the development establishes a welcoming community hub that supports everyday life, encourages active travel and contributes to a strong sense of place. Occupying a prominent location adjacent to the Local Centre, the school sits at the convergence of key pedestrian, cycle, bus and vehicular routes, making it highly accessible to pupils, staff and the wider community. The building is designed to anchor the neighbourhood, connecting surrounding homes with public spaces, sports pitches, allotments and green infrastructure. Together, these elements create an integrated landscape that promotes walking, cycling, recreation and social interaction while reinforcing the wider vision for a sustainable, connected community. The design centres on two teaching wings arranged around a shared community hub, creating a clear organisational spine that supports collaborative learning and intuitive circulation. A flexible layout enables the school to open initially as a two-form entry facility, with the capacity to expand seamlessly to three forms of entry as the neighbourhood grows. Throughout the design process, the building has been carefully shaped by site analysis, stakeholder engagement and technical coordination to respond to the site’s topography, landscape setting and future phases of development. Key principles include creating an active civic frontage, integrating community facilities through secure zoning, encouraging active travel, embedding outdoor learning within the landscape and delivering a building capable of adapting to changing educational and community needs. The school is expressed as a series of interconnected volumes that clearly define their different functions while reducing the perceived scale of the development. The main hall provides a civic focus overlooking the School Square, creating a recognisable landmark within the Local Centre. Teaching accommodation steps down towards the surrounding sports pitches and open landscape, establishing a natural transition between the urban character of the centre and the wider green setting. A robust palette of brickwork forms the primary architectural language, complemented by carefully detailed feature elements that articulate entrances and shared community spaces. Durable, low-maintenance and responsibly sourced materials contribute to the building’s longevity while supporting the project’s environmental aspirations. Landscape has informed the design from the outset and is fundamental to both the character of the school and its relationship with the wider masterplan. Sports pitches, allotments, woodland planting, outdoor classrooms, informal play spaces and sustainable drainage features are integrated to create a connected network of green spaces that supports biodiversity, active lifestyles and outdoor learning. The landscape strategy strengthens connections across the site, enhances the identity of the Local Centre and provides attractive, accessible spaces for both the school and the wider community. Designed as a shared civic asset, the school extends its role beyond education through the inclusion of community-accessible halls, sports facilities and allotments. Secure zoning enables these facilities to operate independently outside school hours, encouraging wider community use and maximising long-term social value. The project has evolved through close collaboration with Eastleigh Borough Council, Hampshire County Council, education specialists, academy trusts and the wider consultant team, ensuring the design responds to both operational requirements and the aspirations of the emerging community.
