Forest House

Wiltshire

Re-Format was commissioned to design a super low energy contemporary house that was sensitive and tailored to its unique site. By referring to local traditional ‘raised barns’ the concept was developed to ‘touch the ground lightly’ and to retain as much of the mature woodland as possible.

The building has been positioned to maximise the available sunlight whilst preserving the setting of the protected existing trees. The main structure along with the shingle cladding was sourced from the ‘secondary quality’ trees felled on site to enhance and manage the woodland.

A super insulated and very low air-permeability structure was designed to achieve the challenging sustainability aspirations, into this a host of low energy measures were seamlessly integrated into the overall form.
