Dunford House

Dunford House

West Sussex

Re-Format was appointed to design proposals for the restoration of Dunford House and renovate the currently vacant building. Built in the 19th century, the house is situated in mature grounds over an undulating landscape, looking across mature oak lined fields and meadows.

The key design proposal, to facilitate the restoration of the house, was to remove the inadequate excess accommodation built in the mid to late 20th century, and return the grounds to their former glory with an easily accessible courtyard garden, orchard and formal lawns.

The facade of the north wing that is to be rebuilt takes inspiration from orangeries and garden rooms with delicate windows and doors, with simple decorative columns and entablature to reference the front elevation. The new pool house is conceived as a simple contemporary pavilion of natural stone and corten steel embedded into the landscape.

“Re-Format has been outstanding, they have worked tirelessly with the planners to make sure that we had agreement to conserve this important Grade 2 listed building. The changes have meant that the landscape strategy has been of vital importance of which Re-Format have been instrumental in coordinating. I could not be more pleased with the work that has been carried out.”
