Pulens Lane

Pulens Lane

Sheet, Petersfield

A development of 19 dwellings in Sheet near Petersfield, including 2 self build homes.

The design follows a landscape-led vision enhancing natural features such as mature trees, open meadows and the site’s proximity to the River Rother. The development includes a mix of detached and semi-detached homes, plus flats and terraced housing. Nine of the houses will be for market sale and eight for affordable homes.

The secluded, characterful site at Pulens Lane features mature protected trees and a riverside edge. The proposed development will host green corridors, rain gardens and swales, public open spaces and sensitive boundary planting. Homes are oriented to face green areas and framed around prominent trees. Drainage is handled naturally, avoiding heave infrastructure and enhancing biodiversity. A new access from Pulens Lane will serve both vehicles and pedestrians, ensuring smart, respectful integration with surroundings.

The relationship of the site in Sheet and the River Rother was highlighted as an important design driver in the SDNP vision for the site. In response, a vision was developed for the series of homes to be directly connected to the handling of water through the site, creating an implicit link between those that dwell in these new homes and the landscape they would become informal custodians of. Sustainable, low-tech solutions, including rain gardens, swales, an attenuation basin and natural overflow were designed to manage surface water while enhancing biodiversity and avoiding overly ‘infrastructural’ approaches.

The new homes are designed in a traditional style incorporating local, vernacular building forms and materials such as clay tile, red heritage brick, timber windows and horizontal timber boarding. Traditionally proportioned gables with bay windows of the houses are repeated along the length of the site, whilst subtle variation between hung clay tile and horizontal timber boarding is used on the secondary elevations.
