Re-Format is a design studio specialising in high quality architecture, graphic design and construction consultancy services, delivering innovative and imaginative services which add real value to our clients.
Our reputation is underpinned by framework commissions with at least 20 public sector clients including local authorities, county councils and registered providers, alongside a wide variety of private sector clients. In recent years we have won the national Housing Design Awards three times and been shortlisted another three times. We are well funded with no debts.
We take care to measure our performance against accepted standards and to ensure we exceed these standards in our delivery of services. See our Quality Assurance section for our accreditations and our environmental statement can also be found here. Our intention is that all our designs make considerable savings for our clients in terms of efficiency in construction, manufacture and environmental impact. Our services are efficient and we control costs carefully. In particular we aim to be fair and honest in all our dealings.
We have over 25 years’ experience and win work through reputation and client references which we are pleased to supply to potential clients. Please contact us if you require architectural, graphic design or associated specialist services. Our contact details are here.
Re-Format takes its name from the idea of re-freshing and re-newal. Good design is inspired from many approaches but ours derives from a re-thinking of fundamental principles. The aim is something truly valuable. Our ideas gain expression from the physical context and our clients’ constraints for a workable and viable solution. This leads to diversity in Re-Format’s projects solutions. Through good design we use the planet’s physical resources in a thoughtful manner.
We produce national award winning architecture for Education, Housing, Restoration, Listed Building Conversion, Commercial and Medical Care. Innovative and attentive services are provided, dealing with the contemporary agendas of environment, sustainability and quality of space. The approach is to integrate the delivery of design through our increasingly broad range of services.
We excel at communication through the use of a strong design aesthetic, compelling ideas and an open mind. Rather than employing any form of ‘house style’, we treat each project as a unique challenge with a unique solution. We offer the following Graphic Design services:
Branding and identity
Exhibitions and events
Key to Re-Format’s approach is a strong client relationship and a clear understanding of the brief.

Our wide variety of clients is important to us and the range of sectors and projects they offer to us has enabled us to build a portfolio of work of which we are proud. We work equally well with both public and private sector clients, adapting to their particular needs. Clients in the public sector include local authorities and registered providers across the south of England and we often work for these clients under framework, or term, appointments. We also work directly with education establishments, both publicly and privately funded, with universities and with large national contractors. Our residential clients include developers and house builders of varying scale as well as private domestic clients, care home providers and specialist residential care providers. We also work with churches, commercial clients and charities.
Our graphics and media team works with a range of private companies as well as publicly funded organisations such as the Association of Chief Police Officers and Hampshire County Council.
At Re-Format we are very pleased to have been the recipients of numerous prestigious national awards as well as being honoured by smaller, local societies for making notable contributions to their towns and cities. We have won the national Housing Design Awards on three occasions – the scheme for one project being described by the judges as “the very best of its kind” – and have been shortlisted six times; we have won Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) design awards for both education and housing schemes; we have won sustainability awards for education and cultural projects; and we have won Civic Trust Awards and Commendations for cultural and housing regeneration projects. Our awards range from those for large scale projects to individual private commissions having won Europan for a large regeneration scheme in Finland and the RIBA Downland Prize twice, including a win for a small artist’s studio.
Re-Format is not currently actively recruiting but we are always keen to look at portfolios for exceptional candidates at all levels.

Each year our whole Re-Format team sets off in search of architectural and graphic inspiration, as well as some essential team building, and embarks on the annual study trip. Organised by Neil and Judy to great acclaim, these trips are to a European city where, guided by a local architect, we are fortunate enough to see some of the best new developments first hand and to spend time learning together.
Over the years we have visited Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Manchester, Marseille, Milan, Newcastle, Paris and Valencia. From Aldo Rossi to Zaha Hadid in Milan, from Mies Van der Rohr in Barcelona to Future Systems in Copenhagen, we walk and tweet our way around, inside and out, enjoying and criticising, but always returning with new ideas (and tired feet).
Re-Format implements an environmental checklist as part of the briefing process for all projects. Once we have established the commissioning aspirations of our clients we can advise on improvements from this baseline. We explain the environmental impact reductions that can be achieved through audit procedures such as BREEAM. On at least 50% of our projects we have facilitated an increase in the output brief by one increment such as increasing from BREEAM ‘good’ to ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’.
We share drawings, files and documents on a secure members’ area of this website, allowing all project team members access to individual projects thereby saving resources and costs.
Within our own studio we have introduced a series of strategies in our Environmental Action Plan in order to reduce our environmental impact in terms of reducing travel and energy consumption, and improving our recycling and waste management. We are committed to improving our own environmental impact.
