Milton Keynes

Overview

Places for People approached Re-Format to develop design proposals for a new housing scheme on the edge of Milton Keynes. Our approach was to design a distinctive new community utilising a series of dwelling clusters, unified by their forms, detailing and materials. The ‘tenure blind’ layout facilitates total flexibility. The fully integrated landscaping creates a beautiful and rewarding living environment.

Trees and lush areas of hedging prevail, carefully detailed to achieve the required verdant feel with minimal ongoing maintenance. The elegant contemporary design makes the development feel distinctive and avoids the issues associated with some housing developments that rely on a random mixture of materials and superficial detailing.

The limited palette of robust materials; brick, aluminium windows and natural roofing slates, unifies the development and gives it a strong sense of place. The ‘shared surface’ highway treatment to the secondary roadways challenges the drabness of standard ‘adoptable highway’ estates. With these simple design philosophies the scheme merges with its surroundings and enhances the local built environment.
