Bolnore Village Primary School

Bolnore Village Primary School

Haywards Heath

Re-Format designed this new 1FE, 210 place, primary school. This was the first new-build, parent promoted, self-governing primary school in the country. Through an intensive consultation process with the local community, Re-Format designed a highly successful learning environment that incorporates a number of innovative solutions to the challenges of the site and addresses the aspirations of the two client groups, West Sussex County Council and The Bolnore School Group. The form of the school moves away from a standard rectilinear building in favour of an organic, curved form that addresses the surrounding woodland and produces a series of striking spaces within. The school was one of the very first achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.

“I would definitely recommend Re-Format. The school building they designed for us met our brief for “an inspirational teaching and learning environment”. But more than that, they got to know us and the kind of school we wanted to establish and they worked with us during the project to ensure the building met that vision.”

Julia Bunting Thring – Founder and Chair of Bolnore School Group and Chair of Governors, Bolnore Village Primary School

“The design of our school brings light to our learning – in all respects. Our children are given every opportunity to feel part of the world around them with every window providing a different view of the ancient woodland around us. The school design really will enable teachers to teach anywhere and children to explore their learning in creative, irresistible ways.”

Sharon Allen, Headteacher

“The panel agreed that this is a highly successful building. It delivers an ambitious brief and achieves a high standard across a number of criteria.”
